Caffeine is a natural alkaloid, which can be found in some plants, such as coffee, cocoa and tea. It is classified as a stimulant and its efficacy is proven by numerous important studies. Caffeine is absorbed in the stomach and from there it rapidly enters in all body fluids. The most well-known effect of caffeine on athletes is the ability to temporarily delay the feeling of fatigue. In 2003, caffeine was eliminated from the WADA Prohibited List. As for the “legendary” properties of caffeine, it is important to say that up to now there is no scientific evidence showing that caffeine can cause addiction or increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. The scientific community seems to agree that a moderate consumption of caffeine (within 300 mg/day) does not cause any health risk.
